What to Do After Your BJJ Blue Belt? A Guide to the Next Level

parents jiu jitsu

Congratulations, Blue Belt! What to Do After the First Major Milestone in Jiu-Jitsu?

Receiving the blue belt is one of the most exciting achievements on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. You survived the “white belt phase,” learned how to defend yourself, and now possess the technical foundation necessary to be effective. The guide on blue belt requirements is in the past. Now, the real challenge begins: using that knowledge to build your own game.

The blue belt is not an endpoint; it is a new beginning. It is the moment when the mindset shifts from “survival” to “strategy.”

At Ceconi BJJ Cypress, we encourage our blue belts to focus on four essential pillars to ensure their growth remains solid and consistent.

Pillar 1: Unwavering Commitment to Consistency

The “blue belt curse” is a reality: many students lose motivation or decrease their frequency after achieving the first goal. This is, ironically, the moment when consistency becomes most vital.

Key Focus

The transition to blue belt means the path to the black belt is long and requires sustained discipline.

  • Increase Frequency (If Possible): If you trained twice a week, try to increase it to three. More quality time on the mat consolidates techniques.

  • Return to Fundamentals: Don’t fall into the trap of only chasing advanced techniques. Your game will be as strong as your fundamentals. Continue reviewing escapes and defenses from white belt.

  • Maintain a Student’s Mindset: Jiu-Jitsu now gets harder because you can no longer rely on the excuse of being a white belt. Maintain humility.

Pillar 2: Define Your “A-Game” (Primary Game)

As a white belt, you learned a little bit of everything. As a blue belt, the goal is to identify and build an “A-Game,” or a set of positions and attacks in which you become specialized.

Questions to Ask

  1. What is Your Strongest Guard Position? Is it closed guard? Half-guard? Spider guard? Choose one or two and learn all their variations, sweeps, and submissions.

  2. What is Your Primary Guard Pass? Choose a consistent method of passing the guard (e.g., Knee SliceToledoOver-Under). Become relentless with it.

  3. What is Your Go-To Submission? Develop a submission you can reliably apply from your dominant position (e.g., mounted choke, Americana from side control).

Tip: Your A-Game should be a three-move chain: (1) Sweep/Takedown -> (2) Guard Pass -> (3) Submission. Start connecting these dots.

Pillar 3: Mastery of Transitions and Concepts

Blue belts must begin to understand the “why” behind the movements, not just the “how.” This requires focusing on transitions and concepts.

Focus on Concepts

  • Leverage vs. Strength: Start to feel and apply body weight, understanding how the correct angle (leverage) overcomes brute force (muscle).

  • Connection and Control: Understand the concept of “connection” (keeping your body glued to your opponent to eliminate space). On top, understand the concept of “pressure,” and underneath, the concept of “structure” and “framing.”

  • Escaping the Middle: Focus on learning to transition between control positions. If you escape side control and transition to half-guard, that counts as a transition victory.

Pillar 4: Start Leading (Learning by Teaching)

A blue belt is the bridge between beginners and more advanced colored belts. Your knowledge is fresh enough to remember the white belt challenges, but solid enough to help.

  • Help White Belts: When they are drilling, offer tips on the details you have just mastered. Teaching incredibly reinforces your own knowledge.

  • Be a Senior Partner: Use your experience to provide a controlled and safe roll for beginners. Always remember mat etiquette and the importance of tapping early.
